DID YOU KNOW?

Buffalo

Buffalos are mainly preyed upon by lions. When a herd member is attacked, others will rush to its defence. Collectively a number of buffalo are more than capable to stave off an attack by an entire pride of lions. A wounded buffalo bull is regarded as most dangerous by hunters. This trait is the origin of many hunting adventures, myths and legends.

Lion

Lions prey mainly on large animals such as Zebra, Wildebeest, Buffalo, Gemsbok and even Giraffe. Smaller prey like Impala, Steenbok and even Porcupine are taken when the opportunity arises. The task of hunting is often left to the lionesses of the pride, which hunt as a team.

Rhino

There is no difference in colour between the two species, with the name of the White Rhino coming from the description of its mouth, wyd or wide. The mouth of the Black Rhino is hooked as opposed to the wide mouth of the White Rhino. The White Rhino is a grazer and the Black Rhino is a browser, hence the shapes of the mouths. There is also a difference in size with the White Rhino been the bigger of the two.

Leopard

Leopards are found from coastal areas to elevations of 2000 m above sea level in forests, deserts, semi-deserts, bushveld, mountains, woodlands and rocky areas. They are not dependant on surface water. Though they diminished in numbers over the years, Leopards are still found in wild mountains and thick bush throughout South Africa.

Lion 2

The heaviest lion on record weighed an amazing 375 kg (826 lb) and lions can reach speeds of up to 81 kph (50 mph) but only in short bursts because of a lack of stamina.
